Caroline will create a woven ceiling in the Sawyer Gallery, echoing the tree canopy within the Garden
EXHIBITION LAUNCH EVENT - 20th Jun 2020 at 2-00pm - Sawyer Gallery - all welcome
Working with plant material from the Garden, Caroline will create a woven ceiling in the Sawyer Gallery, echoing the tree canopy within the Garden; a fresh way to understand the plant material and a new engagement with the natural world.
Caroline works with plants to create woven structures recalling traditional skills and uses whilst being contemporary and meaningful to us today. She likes to explore delicacy and strength within simple structures giving us fresh ways to understand a particular plant or process and giving a new engagement with the natural world.
Responding to the particular space of the gallery this woven ceiling creates an internal space which echoes the tree canopy within the gardens. I am working with New Zealand flax from the gardens to explore how far this woven structure can be pushed. I am working in a new way with this plant which is traditionally used for many forms of basket making in New Zealand.
This work will be made on site through three visits prior to the exhibition. This will be for at least three days each time.
